Giridih district, in the state of Jharkhand, is one of the poorest in the region. Its communities are largely tribal (Santhals), Dalit and from disadvantaged castes, with a female literacy rate of only 50%. Gender-based violence is a persistent concern: Giridih alone recorded nearly 147 rape cases in 2023, about 9% of the state total.

In Tisri block, the Savera Foundation has identified and supported 60 survivors of trafficking, including 51 girls; 20 of them suffered sexual violence. After returning home, these survivors face stigma, social isolation and heavy economic dependency. Access to counselling, legal aid and livelihoods remains very limited in rural areas, making recovery and reintegration difficult.

Implemented by the Savera Foundation in Tisri block and supported by Stand Speak Rise Up!, the Shakti Rising project strengthens the financial independence and social dignity of 20 survivors of sexual violence through skills development and income-generating activities, running until 2028.

• Strengthen confidence, rights awareness and social participation through support groups, counselling and awareness activities;
• Train survivors in locally viable trades (tailoring, sabai-grass handicrafts, soap, candles, incense);
• Support the launch of income-generating activities and access to local markets;
• Strengthen household food security (kitchen gardens) and prevent unsafe migration and exploitation.
