Since 2013, Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria has faced violence from armed terrorist groups, notably Boko Haram, which systematically use sexual violence as a weapon of war. These conflicts have caused mass displacement: around 2.2 million internally displaced people across Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States in 2024.

Displaced women and girls are especially exposed to sexual violence, both on migration routes and in the camps where they live in precarious conditions. On the ground, several critical gaps persist: a lack of specialised care, stigma that hampers the identification of survivors, insufficient training of professionals and weak coordination between services.

Led by the NGO We Are NOT Weapons of War (WWoW) and its local partner Grassroots Researchers Association (GRA), with support from Stand Speak Rise Up!, the project operationalises a coordinated referral system to ensure comprehensive, individualised care for survivors of sexual violence in Borno State, while strengthening the capacities of local actors.

• Strengthen the capacities of 20 medical, psychosocial and legal professionals, including on the digital tool BackUp;
• Provide individualised care to 200 survivors through the referral system;
• Fund transport to appointments, emergency gynaecological consultations and the running of a safe space;
• Raise community awareness to reduce stigma and support the identification of survivors.
