/ The Grand Duchess raises awareness among nearly 200 students at the Athénée de Luxembourg

14/10/2026

On Wednesday 14 October, H.R.H. the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa visited the Athénée de Luxembourg to raise awareness of conflict-related sexual violence among nearly 200 students, in the presence of Claude Heiser, head of the school, and Valérie Sassel, head of the Development project. Among the students were six young ambassadors of Stand Speak Rise Up!, deeply committed to the cause.

Organised as part of the Athénée’s Development project, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in June, the meeting is part of a collaboration between the school and the association that goes back several years.

Making Survivors’ voices heard

In her speech, the Grand Duchess recalled the lasting consequences of rape as a weapon of war for Survivors, their families and their communities. She stressed the importance of making their voices heard, supporting their recovery and giving them their full place in the decisions that affect them.

Discussions that ran well over time

The meeting was marked by the students’ curiosity and eagerness to engage. Beyond the prepared questions, many students spoke up, extending the discussion well beyond the time planned. The Grand Duchess took the time to answer them, talking about the cause as well as her personal commitment and her ties with Survivors.

“Let our indignation become commitment”

This moment of sharing also highlighted the enthusiasm of the young ambassadors of Stand Speak Rise Up! Their involvement inspired other students to join the programme in turn and get involved with the association.

“Let our indignation become commitment.”

The Grand Duchess’s call struck a real chord with a young generation eager to understand and to act.
